Win vs. Trojans puts Central, West back into tie
FROM STAFF REPORTS
ALPENA -- Alpena threw a monkey wrench into the Big North Conference hockey race Friday night.
The Wildcats knocked off league-leading Traverse City Central 5-2, dropping the Trojans into a first-place deadlock with Traverse City West.
"We were awful," said Central coach Chris Givens, whose team was coming off a big 6-1 win over West on Wednesday. "We were not ready to play."
It was Alpena's second win over the Trojans this season.
Jarret Krajniak scored three goals for Alpena. Jon Straley added a goal and two assists.
Alpena led 2-0 after the first period. It was 3-0 following Krajniak's short-handed goal 42 seconds into the second period. Central (12-6-1) finally got on the board 10 minutes later when Shane Darrow scored a short-handed goal. Dane Macdonell assisted.
Alpena scored the next two goals to make it 5-1. Central's Luke Stricker closed out the scoring 10:19 into the third period. Macdonell and Darrow drew the assists.
